Planning the trip, or is it an excursion

We are off to Europe for close on two months. Where should we go?

Another adventure. Yes we are very lucky. And yes, escaping a winter in Staverton (Tasmania) Spring and beginning of summer in Europe . Weather wise, no contest that we head North! We are going to hire cars for a fair bit of self guided touring. This way we experience independence, travel at our own pace, easily become immersed in local culture etc. Not always plain sailing of course. Driving on the left to match the 'relocated' controls and steering wheel, strange roads, signs in French and Italian etc etc all can be tricky. And much fun to be had with the French and Italian languages too!

This time we will be travelling for nine weeks.

Our travel planning has been pretty interesting using the local library and the internet. While there have been a couple of 'must do' items the other parts of the itinerary have drifted in and sometimes out. Google has been an essential partner in out planning.

Jill has also visited 'Google Land' - ? See!

Planned places to visit, things to do, sights to see include:

Burgundy, Chablis and the Cote d' Or

A second attempt to reach Val D'Isere, on our way across the Alps. On our first attempt, in April 1994 failed due to massive snowfalls. The photo below is from that trip. Somewhere around Albertville just before attempting 'the Alps'.

Genoa, home of Columbus and the Cinque Terre

Brescia and the Museo Mille Miglia

Milan, coffee, shopping and more Museo's

Chilling out at Lake Como

Salzburg after 23 years. Hopefully with no snow this time!

Wattens near Innsbruck, to visit the Swarovski Crystal centre

Sampling Champagne in Epernay

Staying with family in Rabat

Stratford on Avon

The British Midlands, to revisit Industrial Britain - (a motoring enthusiasts journey through selected Museums?)

Cornwall, exploring family history

Paris, an apartment in Monmarte

Abu Dhabi, lots of rubber necking

In spite of all our planning Martin Buber (German Philosopher) provided a timely reminder about planning.

All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveller is unaware.

Travelling with Emirates to and from Paris, and Air France to North Africa. Rental cars for travel in Europe. Lots to look forward to and get very excited about.

Next, packing. A lifetime of taking too much. Can such excesses be curbed this time?
